ART REFRESHES THE MIND
project for the elderly
A resident of Kivelä Hospital has made a card of youth memories.
Art Refreshes the Mind is a joint project of EMMA, the Espoo Museum of Modern Art, aimed at elderly people living in care institutions in Espoo. The objective is to actively engage elderly people by way of art, stories, music and visual expression. The project visits support the reminiscence therapy and helps build bridges between observations and images to old people's own personal experiences.
Art Refreshes the Mind project was created out of the desire of the museum to improve its services targeted at elderly people in co-operation with the City of Espoo Social and Health Services. The third partner in the project is the Juvenalia Music Institute. The project planning started in 2005, and the implementation got under way in spring 2007 with the long-term residents of the Aurorakoti and Puolarmetsä hospital homes for the elderly. During rthe autumn of 2011 Art Refreshes the Mind has taken place at Kivelä Hospital in Helsinki.
